To my future Children: Please forgive me in advance

Your dad keeps talking about you, so I have no doubt that you will be here within a year or so. I have nothing to offer you, except for my love and life experiences. You may think that this is ok, but it’s not.  Love doesn’t pay the bills. Since, I’ve been a legal adult, I have tried to build a life of wealth for you. I thought I did the right thing by going to college and earning a degree. However, since your grandparents and great-grandparents didn’t have any wealth, it caused me to pay for college on my own. Your great grandparents  were hard working individuals. They worked in factories for the majority of their existence. They did save money for me. Do you know what I did with $7,000.00? I spent it on ridiculous unnecessary items. Talk about a fun freshman year! Yet, I blame my 19-year-old self for being ignorant and uneducated about finances. So, how did I get the money to pay for the remaining of my college years? I took out student loans.  That’s right love. Another stupid financial decision. However, these loans have kept a roof over my head and food in my mouth. These student loans have  also placed a financial curse upon my finances. Do you know who that affects? That’s right love. You, your father, and me. Mostly you because I am enslaved to the debt system of this country for the rest of my life. There is a high possibility that I will spend the rest of my life paying back for student loans.

Yeah, I may find a career that pays me 45,000-85,000 a year, but will that be enough to jump-start your future? I want you to know that I have worked in a racist, bias,  and discriminating society. People have lied on me, robbed me, and tried to tarnish our family name. You see love, one thing about your Mom is that she is an educated tough woman. No matter what people have tried to do to me, I still kept my head high and looked for opportunities elsewhere. But, there are the times where I think about you and your future. I worry because I know your financial burden and you haven’t even arrived yet. Maybe we can encounter some sort of miracle. For example, winning the Lottery or coming up with million-dollar business plan.  If that doesn’t happen, then I apologize in advance for your financial struggle.

When you arrive, I  promise to teach you how to achieve financial freedom. I will show you the value of hard work and how to save money. I will also teach you how to live within your means and not like some of your peers, who may grow to have horrible money management issues. If you want to go to college, I will not allow you to take out student loans. Rather, I will show you how to achieve an academic scholarship or apply for grants and scholarships. When the time comes for you to blame me for your financial frustrations, I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. I know I had to.

  1. Wow this hit me a lot because I recently made a bad financial decision that set me back this month. You are right. If we don’t do it for ourselves, we should do it (be responsible) for generations to come.

  2. Hits me hard too. I wish I knew then what I know now. Outside of student loans I have no major debt. I wish I could go back in time and do it all over again. You writing this letter I know you will be a great mother and maybe we can’t give our children monetary wealth but I know you will give so many other things to set a solid foundation.
